Becky G Reveals ‘Esquinas’ Album Cover and Release Date, Honors Mexican Roots

Becky G is welcoming us to the intersection, or esquina, of her identities on her upcoming album.
On Tuesday, the Mexican-American musician announced that she’ll release her new album Esquinas — her long-awaited foray into música Mexicana — on Sept. 28, which will capture her as she reconnects with her roots.

“This album is inspired by my roots and the music I’ve been listening to since I was a little girl, but also it has a touch of flow (like always!),” she wrote on Instagram. “This project means so much to me, and it’s a way for me to relive memories to show a bit more of who I am.”
“My desire is that it help you remember that it’s never too late to learn more about your roots,” she adds. “And yes, we can be from here AND from there.”
The album cover art shows a picture of a baby Becky G, age 2, wearing a sombrero, braids, and a red bandana with the word “Esquinas” repeated on the cover art using a typeface that blends Becky’s handwriting as a kid and her grandfather’s as well. The image was taken as a birthday photoshoot at a one-hour photo center.
Becky is set to release her song “Querido Abuelo,” an ode to her late grandfather, on Friday. “You inspire me every day. Even if you’re not here physically, I feel like you’re with me every step of the way, in every path I take,” she wrote on Instagram last week.
Becky G hinted at her foray into música Mexicana in an interview with Rolling Stone about her Coachella performance, which included a large segment celebrating that sound.
“That’s the 200 percent. I don’t want to have to prove that I’m enough of anything to anyone anymore. I’m tired of not feeling Latina enough. I’m tired of not feeling American enough,” she said. “I just am who I am. If you get it, you get it, and if you don’t, you don’t. That’s totally fine, but I think that when you are a 200 percenter, that representation is hard to come across.”
The evolution from rap to pop to reggaetón to música Mexicana seems like a natural progression for Becky G, who has mastered the art of the crossover and the “reverse crossover.” She released her album, similarly titled Esquemas, last year.
Becky will also bring her new album on the road with what she’s naming the Mi Casa, Tu Casa tour. The singer recently released a collab with Gabito Ballestero0 on “La Nena” earlier this year and also collabed with Peso Pluma on “Chanel” and Fuerza Régida on “Te Quiero Besar.” She also tapped Marca MP for “Ya Acabó” last year.
