Becky G powers through mic problems, wows crowd with special guests

Becky G took over the Coachella Stage on Friday afternoon to deliver a set that had a little bit of everything, including special guests, microphone problems and outfit changes — and she handled all of it like a pro.

The pint-sized ball of energy didn't let anything slow her down as she danced her way through a set that was entirely in Spanish, with the exception of the final song, her biggest hit, the pop anthem "Shower." When the chorus came around, the huge crowd assembled around the Coachella Stage all busted out in unison "I'm dancing in the mirror and singing in the shower."

And when the "La-da-di, la-da-da, la-da-da" part hit, it was one of those only-at-Coachella moments with 90,000 like-minded friends all singing and dancing together as the sun went behind the mountains.

Becky G's big moment was almost blindsided when, during her third song, her microphone seemed to die a slow death before finally going kaput. She smoothly strode to the side of the stage, someone handed her a new mic and before she broke into "Baile Con Mi Ex," she asked the crowd "Can you hear me now?" to a loud roar.

From that point on, it was a parade of special guests. First, it was Marca MP to sing her hit "Yo Acabo." He was followed by Mexican singer and rapper Jesus Ortiz Paz and they sang two songs with a quick break for shot of tequila in between. Then finally, it was the much-rumored appearance of Peso Pluma. The mention of his name elicited a huge, excited roar from the crowd. He played a pair of songs with Becky G including their collaboration "Chanel."

The rest was all Becky G. She is a consummate showwoman, so comfortable on stage, singing, dancing, talking to the crowd, ushering her guest stars on and off. She even had some elaborate stage craft as she sat on a moving series of walls and floors, one time requiring her to be buckled in for safety.

It wasn't her first time on Coachella's main stage: she jumped up with not one, but two artists on the 2022 lineup. One was Regional Mexican band Grupo Firme, who played a well-received Spanish-language set that she brought the energy to, and the other was Colombian singer Karol G, who she sing their hit collab, "Mamiii," with for both Coachella weekends.

"She is the sweetest thing there is and it's an honor to have her here," Karol G told the audience during Weekend 2 that year.

This might not be Becky G's last Coachella, if the crowd response was any indication.

What special guests does she have planned for Weekend 2? Only time will tell, but here's hoping more microphone problems isn't one of them.
