When Mike Judge decided to bring back Beavis and Butt-Head for Paramount+, he didn’t want to rely on schticky nostalgia bait. So, he thought of perhaps the best possible way to bring the ’90s icons into 2022: Making one of them a devout BTS fan.

The new Beavis and Butt-Head does stay loyal to the original series’ format, with its titular best friends poking fun at viral videos together in-between their own shenanigans. However, the pair have upgraded to a flat-screen TV, and a new decade means they have a whole new world of clips to pore over.

In one new episode, after a gnarly encounter with a beehive, Beavis and Butt-Head decide to watch BTS’ mega-popular “Dynamite” music video. It turns out, despite their hard-rock attire, one of the characters is a covert member of the BTS ARMY.

“Yes! This song kicks ass!” Beavis exclaims in the segment, going on to point out each BTS member’s name. “And the video kicks ass, too!” When Butt-Head prods him in disbelief, Beavis shamefully tries to retract his praise: “I just know their names ’cause, you know, I hate ’em so much,” he stammers.

But Butt-Head is not convinced that Beavis hates BTS, or that the song is good: “I’m going to leave you with your, uh, seven or eight or 15 BTS boyband dudes,” Butt-Head says as he dismounts the couch and leaves the room. Beavis is understandably disappointed, but at least now he’s free to shimmy his shoulders to BTS without judgment.

Judge told The Hollywood Reporter this week that Beavis’ affection for BTS came from real-life fandom: “BTS is a guilty pleasure — but maybe not even that guilty: I like them,” he said. “I have pretty mainstream tastes. I think because I used to be a musician, people think I’m going to be a music snob. I’m not at all. I like a lot of very sugary pop music. We did that a little bit with Bon Jovi in the ‘90s, Beavis liking them more than he should.” Watch Beavis and Butt-Head debate the K-pop idols below.

The new Beavis and Butt-Head arrives on Paramount+ today, August 4th, and you can also catch their recent feature film Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe. As for BTS, who announced a hiatus back in June, the group’s newly-solo j-hope just became the first South Korean to headline a main stage at a major American music festival.
