‘Beautiful Boy’ Official Trailer: Timothée Chalamet Heads Right Into the Best Supporting Actor Oscar Race
One thing was clear after “Beautiful Boy” made its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival: Timothée Chalamet is a “shoo-in” to earn his second career Oscar nomination, this time for best supporting actor (so says IndieWire’s awards editor Anne Thompson). The 22 year old stars opposite Steve Carell in this true story drama that marks the English-language debut of Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen (“The Broken Circle Breakdown”).
“Beautiful Boy” is based on the memoirs written by Nic Sheff and his father, David Sheff. Chalamet stars as the former, a teenager who spirals into meth addiction. Carell plays David, who struggles to reach out to his son and turn his addiction around. The supporting cast includes Amy Ryan and Maura Tierney.
IndieWire’s Eric Kohn praised the “powerful” and “haunting” performances by Chalamet and Carell in his review out of TIFF. Chalamet was nominated for his first Oscar earlier this year when his lead role in “Call Me By Your Name” made him a contender for best actor. Following “Beautiful Boy,” Chalamet is set to star in David Michôd’s “The King” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women.”
Amazon Studios will open “Beautiful Boy” in select theaters October 12.
