Beau Willimon Re-Elected WGA East President After Running Unopposed

“House of Cards” showrunner Beau Willimon was re-elected to a two-year term as president of Writers Guild of America East on Thursday after running unopposed.

Willimon will be joined on the guild leadership by Vice President Kathy McGee, who ran against Phil Pilato, and Bob Schneider, who was re-elected as secretary-treasurer after running unopposed.

The WGA East elections were far less contentious than the WGA West elections that concluded on Monday. The elections in Hollywood became a referendum on President David A. Goodman’s leadership and the guild’s decision to take the top agencies in Hollywood to court over packaging fees. The campaign between Goodman and opponent Phyllis Nagy drew the largest voter turnout in WGA history and led to a landslide victory for Goodman and his slate, with the incumbent receiving 77% of the vote.

One of Goodman’s staunchest supporters and outspoken critic of packaging fees, David Simon, was re-elected as a freelance member of WGA East’s council. The creator of “The Wire” is a plaintiff in the California lawsuit that was filed this past April by WGA West against CAA, WME, UTA, and ICM Partners that has since been dropped and re-filed in federal court.

The lawsuit claims that packaging fees — payments from a studio to agencies in exchange for packaging talent for a project — are a conflict of interest and a violation of both labor law and agents’ fiduciary duty to clients.
