The Bears scored a brilliant TD by using a second punt returner

“Brilliant” is not a word that has been oft associated with the 2017 Chicago Bears.

But the way the team scored a special teams touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday was certainly deserving of the word.

While the entire Vikings coverage team followed the blocking and presumed flight of the ball to the Bears’ normal punt returner Tarik Cohen, a second returner came out of nowhere to field the ball.

Fifty-nine yards later, Bryce Callahan had scored one of the cooler special teams touchdowns you’ll see.

While Chicago’s special teams coaches should get some credit for calling the play, it isn’t a new scheme. The Bears actually tried this play with Devin Hester and Johnny Knox back in 2011 (it went for a score that was called back by a flag) and the Rams used it with Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey to score a touchdown against the Seahawks in 2014.
