‘Beaches’: Premiere Date & Promo For Lifetime Remake Starring Idina Menzel & Nia Long

Lifetime today announced a January 21 premiere date for its telefilm remake of Beaches and also released a promo and first-look photos. The pic stars Idina Menzel and Nia Long in the respective roles played by Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey in the 1988 feature. Check out the new photos above and below and the promo at the bottom.

Allison Anders directs the contemporary remake. which follows two young girls who meet by chance on the Venice Boardwalk and, though worlds apart in lifestyle, embark on a lifelong friendship. CC (Menzel) is an aspiring singer trying to make it in Los Angeles until she is discovered by a director who gives her a first big shot. Hillary (Long) is the daughter of a prominent civil rights lawyer who struggles to find her own destiny. Their friendship, even with its ups and downs, sustains them for decades.

Gabriella Pizzolo, Grace Capeless, Jodi Capeless, Sanai Victoria and Antonio Cupo co-star.

The remake also features a new take on “Wind Beneath My Wings,” which Midler sang for the original movie. Her version hit No. 1 in the U.S. and won Grammys for Song and Record of the Year. The telepic also includes a new version of “The Glory of Love” — Billy Hill and Benny Goodman’s, not Peter Cetera’s — that Midler also recorded for the original pic.

Beaches is executive produced by Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan. The teleplay by Nikole Beckwith and Bart Baker is based on the 1985 novel by Iris Rainer Dart.
