Beaches on Broadway? Barbara Hershey weighs in

When there were first rumblings of a pre-Broadway production of Iris Rainer Dart’s Beaches, the novel that inspired the 1988 film equivalent of chopped onions starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, most of us couldn’t help but dream of a full-on “Wind Beneath My Wings”-level Broadway affair.

So when EW caught up with Hershey at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, where she was promoting Fox’s Damien, we figured we’d find out what she thinks of an onstage adaptation.

“I’d be interested to see what they do,” she told us. “It seems like a natural for a musical.”

Hershey played Whitney Essex in the Garry Marshall-directed film. Onstage, that role will is currently filled by Bridges of Madison County alum Whitney Bashor (though she’ll go by Bertie White, as she did in the novel.) The production began in late June at Chicago’s Drury Lane Theatre. While there’s no New York dates yet, there’s no reason not to dream.

Watch the full interview below to catch Hershey and her Damien co-star Bradley James talk about bringing the story of The Omen to television.
