Beach goers surprised by apes on horseback promoting new movie

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Beachgoers got a surprise thanks to 20th Century Film, who sent horse handlers dressed as apes to Venice Beach in Los Angeles to promote the upcoming “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” film.

Videos shared online showed three “apes” interacting with beachgoers.

Studio President Steve Asbell reshared the video on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, saying, “We out here opening up an entirely new front on the CGI vs. practical effects twitter debate! #KingdomofthePlanetoftheApes.”

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is the fourth film in the “Planet of the Apes” reboot, which began in 2011 with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”

20th Century Studios lists the following description of the film on the studio’s website:

Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

The film is set for release on May 10.
