Baseball, hip hop, jazz and 'Jaws': Top 5 things to do this weekend in Jacksonville
- Oops!Something went wrong.Please try again later.
Let's be realistic: For most people, this isn't a normal weekend coming up. With the 4th of July coming on Tuesday, more than a few people will be taking a four-day weekend. And good thing, too, because there is plenty going on in the Jacksonville area other than fireworks shows (and there are a lot of them, too).
By the way, bad news for fans heading to Tink's show Friday night in downtown Jacksonville. The show has been canceled.
Baseball, hip hop, jazz and a legendary summer blockbuster movie, this weekend's got it all.
Amplified Avondale
Jacksonville's Jazz Discovery Series comes to Amplified Avondale Friday when singer/trombonist Lexi Hamner plays a free show at the Shoppes of Avondale. She plays at 6 p.m., accompanied by John Lumpkin and Kaleb Thompkins. Others slated to play at the festival include Junco Royals, DJ Papi Disco and Rambler Kane.

Jeezy and Boosie
Even rappers get old eventually. Witness the pairing of the former Young Jeezy and Lil’ Boosie, now just Jeezy and Boosie. They’re joining forces for the State of Emergency Tour, which also includes Webbie, Florida rapper Plies, Sexyy Redd and Rich Homie Quan. 8 p.m. Saturday at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. $69-$250.
Batter up!
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp welcome the Durham Bulls to 121 Financial Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. Friday, 6:35 p.m. Saturday, 3:05 p.m. Sunday and 6:05 p.m. Monday. Fireworks follow Friday's game, the first 2,000 fans on Saturday get a Hawaiian shirt, the team will play in pink jerseys on Sunday (and auction them off after the game) and they have a patriotic hat giveaway on Monday. $5-$38.
Fourth of July Throwback Baseball Game
If the Jumbo Shrimp are just too modern and professional for your tastes, the free annual throwback game, which starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Klutho Park, should be just right. It pits residents of the east side of Springfield against residents of the west side of Springfield, with old-school uniforms and equipment.
‘Jaws’
Nothing says summer like a giant man-eating shark. "Jaws," the ultimate summer blockbuster, shows at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Sun-Ray Cinemas in Five Points, which should leave you just enough time to catch the fireworks after it's over.
