Barry Williams is sharing his thoughts about the iconic Brady Bunch house he helped renovate on HGTV after the new buyer, Tina Trahan, called it the “worst investment ever.”

During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the Brady Bunch star, who played Greg Brady on the classic sitcom, agreed with Trahan that HGTV overpaid when they bought the home for $3.5 million in 2018, they did it for an important reason.

“HGTV overpaid for the home to ensure that they would have the use of it to film what was going to be a one-hour special. It turned into seven episodes,” Williams says, referring to the network's limited series, A Very Brady Renovation. “It was the highest rated show in the history of HGTV the first night that it ran, and it continued to be successful throughout its seven-episode run.”

He adds that calling it a bad investment “is not an accurate statement at all” because “everybody won in this transaction,” meaning both HGTV and Trahan.

“She got it for less than [HGTV] paid for it and she has an iconic home,” Williams continues.

After the show ended, HGTV listed the property for sale in May 2023 for $5.5 million and it sat on the market for several months until Trahan purchased it for $3.2 million in September, meaning the network sold it at a loss of $300,000.

Williams also shared that he was “thrilled” to hear Trahan’s plans to keep the show’s legacy alive by preserving the home as is.

“It is a new era because it is now out of the Brady ownership, but I was thrilled to hear that the new owner will treat it like what it is — art,” he says. “It's not a practical home per se, but it is a very good representation of the set that we filmed on at Paramount Studios, and she wants to keep it that way.”

In September, Trahan confirmed to PEOPLE that the appliances in the house are decorative and don’t work. Still, she will “never touch one thing” — not even to add a flat-screen TV or other modern amenities — because then it’s “no longer The Brady Bunch.”

"There's a lot of value in this for a lot of people that care about it. And HGTV put in a lot of time, effort, and money into the house to make it the way it is and… I find that incredibly valuable,” Trahan added.

On HGTV’s A Very Brady Renovation, all six of the famous Brady siblings — including Williams,  Maureen McCormick (Marcia), Christopher Knight (Peter), Eve Plumb (Jan), Mike Lookinland (Bobby) and Susan Olsen (Cindy) — reunited for the first time in fifteen years to renovate the interior of the iconic Los Angeles home.

The house's front facade was used for exterior shots on the show but interior scenes were filmed on a soundstage. On the show, the stars and a cast of HGTV stars renovated the inside to look exactly like the Brady house fans know and love.
