‘Barry’ Trailer: Netflix’s Barack Obama Movie Profiles The Future President In College

Netflix has dropped the official trailer for Barry, its original film about Barack Obama, ahead of its December 16 premiere.

Barry looks at a pivotal year for Obama as he arrives in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. His experiences over that critical school year lay the foundation for his views on race, government, and what it means to be an American, all leading to his eventual election as the 44th President of the United States.

The film, which premiered to critical praise at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival, stars Australian newcomer Devon Terrell in a breakout performance as Barry. Supporting cast includes Ashley Judd, Jenna Elfman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Mitchell, Ellar Coltrane and Avi Nash.

Director Vikram Gandhi (Kumaré, HBO’s Vice), a Columbia University alumni, approached fellow alum Adam Mansbach (author of Go the F**k to Sleep) to help tell the origin story, and from that collaboration Mansbach penned the script.
