JFK personally invited her to sing at the 1963 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner just days ahead of the event. “You must know by now that I can be remarkably blasé about a lot of things, but this was exciting, even for me,” she wrote in her book. At just 21 years of age, she joyously performed three songs for the popular president and recalled the moment after the dinner when she had the opportunity to meet him for the first time.

“When JFK got to me, he told me that I had a beautiful voice and asked, ‘How long have you been singing?’ I said, ‘About as long as you’ve been president.’ He laughed, and then I did exactly what we were told not to do,” she revealed. Streisand asked for an autograph for her mother on her name card from the table. That’s when the young singer slipped in a playful response when he handed it back to her. “You’re a doll,” she said to him. “I guess some people were a little surprised to hear me saying it to the president,” she wrote. “Frankly, it just slipped out.”

Sixty years later, Streisand has no regrets about her coquettish quip to the late president because she was caught up in the moment — the rules were made to broken in that once-in-a-lifetime situation. Sadly, the autographed card never even made it home that night, she had lost it before she ever had the chance to give it to her mother. But she will always have the cute interaction with JFK.
