Barbra Streisand’s Comments on This Antiquated Fashion Rule Are Absolutely Perfect

If we’re being honest, there are quite a few out-dated fashion rules we’d like to bid a not-so-grateful farewell to, and we’re not the only ones who feel that way. Barbra Streisand, the iconic, multi-hyphenate talent, isn’t very interested in one particular reductive fashion rule, as well. She addressed that very topic in a recent interview, and what she had to say is absolutely spot-on.
Like us, Streisand isn’t a fan of the rule that one should dress their age. In fact, she doesn’t like the concept one bit. “People should express themselves and wear whatever they feel on any given day,” she said in a recent interview with The New York Times. “And that has nothing to do with age.”

The Funny Girl Oscar-winner has been an icon in Hollywood for decades, which means her fashion has always been a point of conversation. But for Streisand, trends have never been of interest to her, preferring her own idiosyncratic style over whatever’s deemed popular. “I never just went with the style of the day,” she said. “I had other images in my head. I was inspired by period films, paintings in museums and those fabulous Mucha posters of Sarah Bernhardt that I first saw when I was a teenager.”
From the time she was young, Streisand’s always been true to herself. It’s no wonder she isn’t interested in “dressing for one’s age.” She’s not alone either. “Dressing for whose age? I don’t think about age,” Martha Stewart said back in October. “I think people are more and more and more [fabulous] than they’re ever been in their senior years, and I applaud every one of them.” Fashion trends will always come and go, so why try to keep up with them? At the end of the day, there’s only one piece of fashion advice we should adhere to: don’t dress for others, dress for yourself.
