Barbra Streisand reveals the stage name she could have had

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Monday, the only artist ever to have a number one album in six consecutive decades, Barbra Streisand, revealed some of the ways people tried to change her when she was first starting out in music. Including giving her a different stage name.

“People wanted me to be called Barbara Sands,” Streisand said. “I thought, ‘What? No.’ Streisand is my name. I don't want to change it.”

Streisand, who was on the show to promote her lates album, "Release Me 2," did actually change her name back when she was 18-years-old. She switched it from Barbara with three “A’s” to Barbra with two “A’s,” with the goal of adding some uniqueness while not changing it too much.

Along with trying to change her name, it seems she was also fielding unsolicited suggestions for other aspects of her music career as well.

“For my first record they wanted me to call it ‘Sweet and Saucy Streisand,’” the EGOT winner said. “I am neither too sweet or too saucy.”

Now, Streisand may not love a dipping sauce-themed album title, but her fans on Twitter seem to think it sounds pretty appealing.

But really, as someone who has found continued success decade after decade, Streisand has seemingly always just tried to keep things simple. Even from the beginning.

“My first show, I remember people were asking, ‘where's my album?’” Streisand said. “So I said, ‘Let's name it what it is. The Barbra Streisand album.’ That's what it is. You know.”

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
