It's Barbie vs. Oppenheimer: Made-to-order drinks & fun at new East Naples kava lounge

If the name Ashley Giannone rings a bell, perhaps you grew up in town or might have young kids attending North Naples Middle School, where she is a world history teacher.

With behind-the-scenes help from husband Vinny, a software developer, she opened Alchemist Kava on July 1, the first lounge of its kind in East Naples.

Both are Lely High School graduates, yet not childhood sweethearts, who reconnected. They are expecting twin baby boys any day now.

Inspiration ignited when the couple was studying for their master’s degrees; Ashley's in education leadership from the University of Florida and Vinny's in computer science from Georgia Tech. They loved brewery settings, but the boozy atmosphere was counterproductive to studying. They soon discovered the kava scene.

As for the neighborhood, “It feels like coming home,” she said.

This kava cavern tavern has a distinctly urban Zen vibe with comfy couches, free WiFi, tables and chairs for socializing or working remotely. Fun programming plays a starring role: from food trucks (Addison’s was there July 15) to pajama parties and live entertainment, it’s all about chilling out.

She blinded me with science

The lounge's name is inspired by alchemy, the medieval precursor of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. According to the Oxford Dictionary, "Alchemy was particularly concerned with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find a universal elixir." The clever logo is based on kavalactones' chemical formation, the brew's compounds.

Guests are welcome to bring their own food though snacks are available. Not a fresh-brewed kava fan? Alchemist Kava also serves selections of Grumpy Goat coffee, herbal teas and soft drinks.
