The 2024 Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday morning, December 11 starting at 5:00am Pacific/8:00am Eastern. So what were the best achievements in film and television according to the Golden Globe Association and select international entertainment journalists? Check out the complete list of nominations here.

The morning started with eight nominations for “Succession” with yet more awards yet to announce. On film “Barbie” started out with seven bids including three for songwriting while “Poor Things” got off to a great start with six bids and “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” got four apiece. “Past Lives” scored for Best Film Not in the English Language as well as writing and directing bids for Celine Song.

When all was said and done “Succession” and “Barbie” tied for the most nominations with nine apiece, leading the television and film fields, respectively. For film, “Oppenheimer” followed close behind with eight bids, with “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” at seven apiece. No show came close to “Succession” on TV, though the comedies “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” did pick up five each to lead the comedy pack.

Two new categories were introduced to the awards. The Cinematic and Box Office Achievement nominations went to “Barbie,” “Oppeenheimer,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and the latest installments of the “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Mission: Impossible” and “John Wick” franchises. For Best Stand-Up Performance, the Globes cited former Globes host Ricky Gervais along with Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.

The Golden Globe Awards were formerly bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), an organization representing under 100 journos from across the world. Somewhat across the world at least. In 2021 it was revealed that the HFPA didn’t have any Black members, and hadn’t had a Black member in almost 20 years.

That controversy led to a boycott, so NBC declined to air the 2022 ceremony, which took place as a private event instead. The awards returned to the network in January 2023, but in June of this year the HFPA was disbanded and the awards were acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries. The Globes are now handed out by the Golden Globe Association under president Helen Hoehne and executive vice president Tim Gray, formerly an editor of Variety. (Variety and Gold Derby are both owned by Penske Media Corporation, which is also the parent company of Dick Clark Productions.)

This year’s event has a couple more big changes. The supporting acting categories for television, which had just been expanded last year into four categories, were contracted again into two awards for Best Television Supporting Actor and Best Television Supporting Actress. But there are two new categories. For film the Globes have introduced the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, and on the TV side we’ve got Best Stand-Up Comedian.

The awards will take place on January 7, 2024, broadcast on CBS for the first time since 1982.
