‘Barbie’ To Bask In $600M+ Global Box Office Through Today; ‘Oppenheimer’ Will Cross $300M+ WW

FRIDAY UPDATE: Warner Bros’ Barbie has passed a new milestone at the international box office, crossing $300M with Thursday’s grosses included. The Greta Gerwig-directed pic is heading into its second weekend, and is also due to hit the $600M worldwide benchmark when today’s figures are tallied.

On Thursday, the Margot Robbie/Ryan Gosling-starrer added $28.1M from 69 overseas markets, a 15% drop from Wednesday. The offshore cume through yesterday is $320.3M with global at $578.7M.

Barbie has now claimed the biggest opening week ever for a Warner Bros film in New Zealand, and the second-biggest in Australia as well as the top opening week of the year in both.

In individual markets, Barbie continues to strut through the UK with aplomb. At $45.4M, the film now boasts biggest non-franchise opening week of all time.

That’s the top market, while Mexico ($33.4M), Brazil ($27.3M), Australia ($20.3M) and China ($18M) round out the Top 5.

A couple of notes here: China improbably, given expectations, grew 75% on Thursday versus last Friday’s opening, and Germany increased 51% on Thursday from last week’s bow and 4% from the previous day, cume there is $14.6M.

As for Universal’s Oppenheimer, it’s still on track, as we reported yesterday, to cross $300M worldwide today. On Thursday, the Cillian Murphy-starrer added $15.5M for an international cume of $164.7M and a global total of $292.6M.

Going into the second weekend, the Christopher Nolan opus has now grossed $24.8M in the UK, which surpasses the lifetime of Tenet and is 3% above Dunkirk and over 2x Interstellar at the same point.

France is at $13.3M, for 89% above Dunkirk and 58% above Interstellar at the same point.

Germany has a running total of $11.8M, performing just 11% off Dark Knight Rises and well ahead of Interstellar and MI:7 at the same point, having already overtaken the lifetime of Dunkirk.

India’scume to date is $10.4M, having already surpassed the lifetimes of all Nolan comps.

Australia’s total to date is $9.3M, for 50% above Dunkirk and over 2x Interstellar so far.

Mexico has grossed$7.4M, surpassing the lifetimes of Interstellar and Tenet having already overtaken the lifetimes of Tenet and Dunkirk.

PREVIOUS, THURSDAY UPDATE: Barbenheimer is the gift that keeps on giving. The Kenergy is so high on Warner Bros’ Barbie that it spiked by 3% at the international box office on Wednesday versus Tuesday and added $32.7M in 69 markets. That brings the global running cume on the Greta Gerwig pic to a fantastic $528.6M, including $291.4M from  overseas. This is all after only one week of release.

Meanwhile, also continuing incredible holds, Universal’s Oppenheimer added another $16M from 78 international box office markets, again a less than 1% dip from the previous day. The offshore cume is $147.2M through Wednesday. Combined with domestic, the global total is $265.1M with the $300M benchmark expected to be achieved with Friday grosses.

Notably, Barbie is now tracking ahead of the Top 5 WB regional comps in Latin America, including Joker (+84%), Batman V Superman (+51%), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (+56%), Aquaman (+133%) and Justice League (+65%).

In the UK, where the cume through Wednesday is $40.2M, Barbie’s first week is currently the 2nd biggest for a WB film ever, just behind Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Mexico grossed $2.3M on Wednesday, just a 19% drop from Tuesday, for a $31.4M running cume. Brazil is at $25.2M through Wednesday after adding $2.1M yesterday, just a 4% dip from the previous day. Australia has grossed $18.9M to date, and China is now at $15.9M, defying expectations with a 10% drop from Tuesday.

Other notable markets include France with $15.1M so far, and Spain with $13.3M to date and on par with Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as 10% ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water and 19% above The Super Mario Bros Movie at same point in time. Italy had the best Wednesday for a WB film ever with $2M for a running cume of $14.4M.

At the same time, the midweeks on Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer have been bigger than key comps. Certain markets are now in week 2, including France which always opens movies on a Wednesday, and are very strong. France’s second Wednesday was down just 24% in admissions versus last week’s debut, now with a cume of $10.3M which is 58% above Dunkirk and 30% above Interstellar at the same point. Yesterday’s hold was the best for a Nolan movie in the market on a sophomore Wednesday.

Elsewhere, the UK/Ireland added $2.9M on Wednesday with 28% share at No. 2 in the market for a cume to date of $22.2M, which is 3% above Dunkirk and over 2x Interstellar at the same point.

Germany added $1.4M at No. 2 on Wednesday (27% market share) for a running total of $10.3M, performing well ahead of Interstellar and more than double M:I7 at the same point, having already overtaken the lifetime of Dunkirk.

India on Wednesday added $760K for a running cume of $9.8M. This is Nolan’s biggest film ever in the market.

Australia added $700K on Wednesday at No. 2 (29% share) for a running total of $8.6M, which is 49% above Dunkirk and over 2x Interstellar at the same point.

Mexico put up another $600K at No. 2 on Wednesday (18% market share) for a running total of $6.8M having already overtaken the lifetimes of Tenet and Dunkirk. Performance to date is 16% above M:I7 and more than double Interstellar at the same point in release.

Spain added $1.1M at No. 2 on Wednesday (20% market share) for a running total of $6.3M, performing above The Dark Knight Rises (18%), double Interstellar and more than double Dunkirk and M:I7 at the same point.

Netherlands added $500K on Wednesday at No. 2 (27% share) for a cume to date of $4.1M, which is 97% above Dunkirk and 90% above The Dark Knight Rises at the same point.

Brazil took in a further $400K on Wednesday at No.2 in the market for a cume to date of $4.1M, having surpassed the lifetimes of DunkirkInterstellarTenetInception and Batman Begins.

Rounding out the Top 10, Saudi Arabia added $500K on Wednesday at No.1 with 44% market share for a cume to date of $6M.

PREVIOUS, WEDNESDAY: The Barbenheimer phenomenon just keeps going. To wit: there is so much energy happening at international box office turnstiles that Tuesday’s grosses on Warner Bros’ Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie and Universal’s Christopher Nolan opus Oppenheimer were down just 1% from Monday. The offshore gross through Tuesday on Barbie is now $258.5M with global at $472.6M.

As for the Cillian Murphy-led Oppenheimer, it saw a less than 1% dip from Monday to Tuesday, adding $16.1M in 78 offshore markets. The international cume c is now $130.8M for $238M global

Breaking down Monday, Barbie dolled up a $31.9M gross from 69 overseas markets, off a single percentage point from the record-breaking Monday.

In the Europe/Middle East/Africa region, Barbie has already surpassed the lifetime total os The Meg, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Ready Player One, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla. In Latin America, the doll is the No. 3 Hollywood movie of 2023 after just six days.

Looking at individual markets, the UK had the biggest Tuesday ever for Warner Bros; gross to date is $34.7M.

Mexico is the next biggest market with $29.1M through Tuesday, a 16% dip versus Monday, followed by Brazil at $23M (-19% from Monday). Australia, at $17.M and 2% over Monday is next with China and France both at $13.6M, each with good holds.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer is continuing to fuse with audiences offshore as well. Mid-weeks through Tuesday account for 34% of opening weekend.

UK/Ireland added $2.7M on Tuesday with 28% market share for a cume to date of $19.3M, which is 8% above Dunkirk and over 2x Interstellar at the same point. Midweek gross is equal to a 39% share of the opening weekend – is in line with the same days’ share for Dunkirk, and above InterstellarThe Dark Knight Rises, and Mission: Impossible 7.

France added $1.4M on Tuesday with 20% market share (in admissions) for a cume to date of $9.4M, which is 56% above Dunkirk and 26% above Interstellar at the same point. The mid-week gross is equal to a 35% share of the opening weekend, which is above the same days’ share for DunkirkThe Dark Knight Rises and Mission: Impossible 7.

Germany added $1.1M on Tuesday (25% market share) for a running total of $8.8M, performing well ahead of Interstellar and more than double M:I7 at the same point, having already overtaken the lifetime of Dunkirk. The Monday-Tuesday total is equal to 32% of opening weekend, higher than for DunkirkInterstellar, and M:I7.

Australia added $800K on Tuesday for a running total of $7.9M, which is 48% above Dunkirk and over 2x Interstellar at the same point. Mid-week gross thus far is equal to a 24% share of opening weekend, in line with the same days of Dunkirk, just below Interstellar, and above The Dark Knight Rises and M:I7.

Mexico added $700K at No.2 on Tuesday for a running total of $6.2M. Having already overtaken Tenet, the film has now surpassed the lifetime of Dunkirk. Performance to-date is +14% above MI:7 and more than double Interstellar and Dunkirk at the same point in release.
