‘Barbie’ Director Greta Gerwig Plays Coy To Potential Ken Movie Spinoff

Greta Gerwig hit box office gold with Barbie, the film starring Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Following the movie’s success, there have been questions about following it up with a sequel. Warner Bros. nor Mattel have confirmed anything is in the works, but in a recent interview, Gerwig was asked about a potential Barbie spinoff revolving around Ken.

“I mean, the truth is, you know…I guess we’ll see,” Gerwig told Sharyn Alfonsi during a 60 Minutes interview.

Gerwig played coy to Alfonsi’s question about a Ken movie, saying she couldn’t comment on the matter but didn’t shut down the possibility entirely.

The topic of an entire movie focusing on Gosling’s Ken came to be after Gerwig mentioned they had a lot of ideas for the character that ultimately didn’t make the final draft of the script.

“We had way too much material for Ken. We would write, and write, and write,” Gerwig said.

Previously, Gerwig had mentioned that before casting Gosling as Ken, she wrote the part with the actor in mind.

“We wrote his name into the script and everything… and [Gosling’s name] was everywhere,” Gerwig told the NYT. “And then when we handed them the script, the studio was like ‘Oh, it’s so wonderful that you know Ryan.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Ryan. I’ve never met Ryan, I have no idea.’”

Gosling ultimately ended with the lead Ken role opposite Robbie, who also served as an executive producer in the film. Robbie seemingly shut down a potential sequel to Barbie, saying that the film wasn’t written to be a saga.

“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” Robbie told the Associated Press. “Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

Following its run in theaters earlier this year, Barbie will hit streaming starting Dec. 15 on Max.
