After years of dating, the two creative collaborators finally tied the knot.

Barbie co-writers celebrated their film's big year in a major way. Director/writer Greta Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach are now officially married after several years together, a representative for the couple confirmed to PEOPLE. They apparently preferred to celebrate the occasion at New York City Hall rather than a pink Dreamhouse or Mojo Dojo Casa House.

The two first met when Gerwig was cast in Baumbach's 2010 movie Greenberg. At the time, Baumbach was still married to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, who filed for divorce in November of that year which was finalized in 2013. Any similarities between these events and the plot of Baumbach's 2019 divorce film Marriage Story are of course a matter of speculation, though the director has said his ex-wife liked the Oscar-winning movie "a lot." Gerwig and Baumbach made their red carpet debut as an official couple at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards.

Gerwig and Baumbach's creative collaboration became more involved on his next movie, Frances Ha, which she co-wrote and starred in as the title character. They did the same for 2015's Mistress America, before Gerwig began her own solo directorial career with 2017's Lady Bird. Barbie is the first film directed by Gerwig to be co-written with Baumbach.

Baumbach wasn't able to participate in the Barbie press tour this summer because of the Hollywood writers' strike, but the two have since discussed their collaboration in post-strike interviews. At an October screening in L.A., Baumbach admitted that he was skeptical of the project at first.

“I kind of blocked it for a while and every time she’d bring it up, I’d be like, ‘You’ve gotta get us out of this,'" Baumbach said. "And then the pandemic happened."

As the two worked on the script during the COVID-19 lockdown years, Baumbach came around to Gerwig's approach. He's now proud of the final results, calling it "the most fun I think either of us have ever had."

Perhaps more importantly, the couple quietly welcomed their second child earlier this year.
