Barbecue competition, bicycle race and more in Oshkosh's can't-miss events this week

OSHKOSH - This week in Oshkosh you can sample some BBQ eats, take part in a bicycle "race," or watch a basketball tournament.

Here are your five can't-miss events happening in the community this week.

1. BBQ competition set for July 14 and 15 at Brighton Acres

If you want to check out a barbecue competition, Brighton Acres will host the annual BBCubed - Brighton Barbeque Bash July 14 and 15.

This Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned competition is held the third weekend of July each year in Oshkosh.

In addition to the lineup of BBQ competitors, there will be other food vendors and a craft fair. Entertainment over the weekend includes hot air balloons, lumberjack shows and live music.

The People’s Choice dinner is your chance to sample the competitor’s entries and vote for your favorite. It is set for 5 p.m. July 14. Tickets are $30 at brightonacres.com.

2. All riders welcome to join Oshkosh Alleycat Race

The fourth Oshkosh Alleycat Race of the season will set off from Opera House Square at 6:30 p.m. July 15.

All bikes and all levels of ability are welcome. Ride solo or in teams, race or take your time — it’s rider’s choice. Hosted by Winnebago Bicycle, there is a $5 entry fee per person.

Riders can expect the route to be about 15 to 20 miles. Participants should wear a helmet and take a light. Arrive at 6 p.m. to get the list of checkpoints. The race starts at 6:30 p.m. Bonus stops are optional.

3. Sawdust City Classic basketball tournament tips off July 15

The Sawdust City Classic will be held July 15 and 16 at the UW-Oshkosh Student Recreation and Wellness Center, 735 Pearl Ave., Oshkosh.

The statewide five-on-five adult indoor basketball tournament is hosted by Sawdust City Sports & Entertainment. Special events include slam dunk, 3-point, and skills challenges, along with a tournament MVP.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 15 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16. Spectator fee is $5 per day.

4. Charity golf outing to raise funds for YMCA programs

The Oshkosh Y Charity Golf Outing helps raise funds for Y programs including financial assistance for memberships, child care and more.

This year’s outing will be July 17 at the Oshkosh Country Club. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The day includes golf, food and raffles.

5. Boogie and the Yo-Yoz headline free concert at Leach

The concert runs 6 to 9 p.m. at 303 Ceape Ave., Oshkosh. Gate opens at 5:30 p.m.

The family-friendly event includes face painting, bounce houses and food trucks.
