Barack and Michelle Obama Marked Sasha's 20th Birthday With Adoring Public Tributes

Former President Barack and former First Lady Michelle Obama's youngest daughter Sasha Obama celebrates her 20th birthday today, and the couple marked the occasion with rare public tributes to her.

Both shared throwback photos of Sasha and sweet messages to their daughter, who's officially no longer a teen. (Sasha is currently in college.)

Barack wrote, “Happy birthday, Sasha! You’ve grown so much, and it’s been a joy to watch you become the person we always hoped you’d be. Your mom and I can’t wait to see where life takes you next.”

Michelle shared on her Instagram, “Happy birthday to my darling Sasha! I am so grateful for every laugh we’ve shared—and everything you’ve taught me over the years. You’ll always be my little girl, but I couldn’t be prouder of the woman you are becoming. Love you so much! 🎉🥳💗”

Sasha has no public social media accounts and has been able to navigate her life as a teen and young adult out of the public eye since her father's presidential term ended. The Obamas have made a point to protect their two daughters' privacy (Sasha's older sister Malia is 22), although they will talk a little about Sasha and Malia in interviews from time to time, the way any proud parent would.

In November, Barack spoke about what Sasha is like now to InStyle. “Sasha is, as Malia describes it, completely confident about her own take on the world and is not cowed or intimidated—and never has been—by anybody’s titles, anybody’s credentials,” he said. “If she thinks something’s wrong or right, she will say so. When she was 4, 5, 6 years old, once she made a decision, she would dig in and couldn’t be steered off it. I write about it in the book, how we were trying to get her to taste caviar when we were visiting Russia. She was like, ‘Mnn-nnh. No. Sorry. That looks slimy. It’s nasty. I’m not going to do it—even if I’ve got to give up dessert.’ And that part of her character has always been there.”
