Bar fight over World Cup ends with 4 hurt, including 2 officers, Illinois police say
A bar fight over the Argentina vs. Mexico World Cup soccer game left four people in Illinois injured, according to news reports.
The Gold Coast Social bar and restaurant in Chicago hosted a watch party for the Argentina vs. Mexico soccer match on Saturday, Nov. 26, the owner told WGNTV. However, when Mexico lost 2-0, some fans became aggressive, beginning to argue and fight inside the bar.
The fight moved to the street, CBS News reported. Video showed one person throwing a stanchion at the bar window.
The Chicago Police Department responded to reports about multiple people fighting in the street around 5:45 p.m., according to a Nov. 26 news release.
Two police officers were injured while responding to the fight, the release said. One officer had a face injury but declined medical attention. Another officer’s face was scraped and bruised. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital in good condition.
Two others were injured in the fight, and both were taken to a hospital in good condition, The Chicago Sun Times and ABC 7 reported.
Five people of interest were questioned by police, the release said. No charges have been filed.
The owner of the bar told The Chicago Sun Times that the business was closed for the rest of the night out of respect for the officers who were hurt.
