Baker in Supreme Court Wedding Cake Case Thinks Jesus Would Have Made the Same Decision

Speaking on TV for the first time since the Supreme Court announced it would hear his case, Colorado baker Jack Phillips, along with his attorney, Kristen Waggoner, went on The View and explained his refusal to make a wedding cake for a gay couple.

“I tried to politely tell them that I didn’t do cakes for same-sex weddings. I serve everybody all the time, but I don’t make every cake for every event,” Phillips said.

Based on polling in 2017 done by the Pew Research Center, 62 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage, so, needless to say, Phillips’s decision was not a popular one. The couple involved, Charlie Craig and David Mullins, sued Phillips and have prevailed at every level in Colorado courts, so Phillips brought the issue to the Supreme Court.

James Esseks of the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents Craig and Mullins, said Monday: “The law is squarely on David and Charlie’s side, because when businesses are open to the public, they’re supposed to be open to everyone. While the right to one’s religious beliefs is fundamental, a license to discriminate is not. Same-sex couples like David and Charlie deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect as anyone else, and we’re ready to take that fight all the way to the Supreme Court.”
