BAFTAs: The red carpet and backstage are two different worlds

The BAFTAs red carpet is well underway here in London, the UK, and the rain, this year, has thankfully stayed away. Taking place at the Royal Festival Hall on Waterloo’s Southbank, film fans have gathered at the erected fences surrounding red carpets, with excited teens clamoring for sights of Zendaya and Margot Robbie.

A few yards on the other side of the fence, movie stars sashayed their way into interviews, with the radiant Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers,” speaking to red carpet host Alex Zane. Randolph, who is at her first ever BAFTAs, said: “Everything is so lovely and excited. There’s a buzz. It’s wonderful, it’s so great to be here.”

She continued: “It’s a different experience when it’s not just your category. It’s special. We can enjoy the whole process together. We had amazing chemistry, everyone was so kind, no egos, it was all a dream. It does make the project richer.”

Another actor making their mark at their first BAFTAs is Teo Yoo, who rocked up looking like a mega movie star in a slick, all-black suit. He’s up for Best Actor for “Past Lives.” Meanwhile, Andy Serkis, who was awarded the 2020 BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema, expressed the need to keep the British film industry an open one to new talent and to “break down barriers” for those trying to get in.

Meanwhile, us press members were escorted into the media centre, which was located in one of the Royal Festival Hall’s beautiful theatres. Sat on the stage opposite the empty auditorium, we watched via screens as Rosamund Pike, looking immaculate, spoke highly of cinematographer Linus Sandgren, who she said brilliantly “interpreted Emerald Fennell’s eye.” Meanwhile, fans screamed joyously at glimpses of “Barbie” stars Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who both looked spectacular: Robbie in a pink and black dress and Gosling in a white suit adorned with red trimming.

Meanwhile, we were finally escorted over to the Winners Press Conference Room — the most stiflingly hot room without windows in all of the UK, surely — where no food or water was provided. There was barely time to settle into the first category, which was Best Original Screenplay. Stay tuned for all the winners and more.
