‘The Crown’ Battles It Out With ‘Black Mirror’ & ‘Line Of Duty’ As BAFTA TV Nominations Are Unveiled

Netflix drama The Crown is once again set to duke it out to win at the BAFTA TV Awards after being nominated in three key categories alongside Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series Black Mirror, Thandie Newton-fronted cop drama Line of Duty and domestic British series Three Girls.

The period series was shut out at last year’s event despite picking up five nominations and has once again been nominated in the best drama category, while Claire Foy will go up against Hollywood star Thandie Newton for best actress. Given Foy’s performance over the two seasons, and the recent controversy over her salary, she is the hot favorite to pick up a gong as she exits the Left Bank drama. Similarly, Vanessa Kirby, who is handing over the reins of Princess Margaret to Helena Bonham Carter for seasons three and four of The Crown, is nominated for supporting actress against Broken’s Anna Friel, Three Girls’ Liv Hill and Broadchurch’s Julie Hesmondhalgh.

The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts TV Awards were announced this morning in London.

Coronation Street and Our Girl star Michelle Keegan and Strictly Come Dancing winner Ore Oduba announced the nominees for the event, which will take place on May 13 and will once again be hosted by former Great British Bake Off host Sue Perkins.

Netflix’s growing dominance in the original space continues to show with multiple nominations for The Crown and Black Mirror, while it also airs a number of nominated series including Peaky Blinders, The End of the Fxxking World, People Just Do Nothing and Chewing Gum internationally.

This comes after BAFTA tweaked its rules a couple of years ago to adapt to a changing landscape to allow series that were largely funded by international services.

The Crown, which lost out to Happy Valley in best drama last year, once again faces tough competition in that category, up against critically acclaimed Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders, which was nominated for season two but not for season three, and The End of the Fxxking World.

A number of U.S. co-pros were also nominated in the mini-series category including Starz funded Howards End and Nat Geo’s The State, which are up against British series The Moorside and Three Girls.

HBO’s breakout hit Big Little Lies comes up against FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Ken Burns’ high-profile PBS doc series The Vietnam War in the international category.

In comedy, Amazon co-pro Catastrophe faces competition from Michaela Coel’s Chewing Gum, BBC Three breakout mockumentary This Country and period jazz comedy Timewasters.

Viacom’s Channel 5, which has struggled to win major awards over the years, will be pleased with its entry in the features category, with one of its key shows, Cruising with Jane McDonald coming up against Antiques Roadshow, No More Boys and Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free? and The Secret Life of the Zoo.
