Among those films in contention at the Oscars, “Oppenheimer” had the best showing in the BAFTA Awards nominations with 13 including Best Picture. “Poor Things” followed up with 11 bids while two Oscar frontrunners — “The Zone of Interest” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” — followed with nine BAFTA bids apiece. “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” and “Maestro” each earned a lucky seven. “All of Us Strangers” picked up six while both “Barbie” and “Saltburn” snagged five. “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things” are the five Best Picture nominees with the likes of “Barbie” and “The Zone of Interest” missing out.

Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” did very well, with some of its 13 bids including Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Supporting Actor for Emily Blunt, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was only one of two films to land nominations for picture, directing, writing, acting, and editing.

The other was Justine Triet‘s “Anatomy of a Fall,” with Triet earning double bids for writing and directing. Speaking of double bids: Sandra Hüller was nominated for both Best Actress (for “Anatomy of a Fall”) and Best Supporting Actress (“The Zone of Interest”).

The latter boosted its Oscar credentials in several categories with Jonathan Glazer also earning dual nominations for writing and directing. Bradley Cooper, too, picked up double nominations for writing and directing “Maestro” while he was also nominated for Best Actor. “Maestro” also reaped a Best Actress bid for Carey Mulligan.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” made the cut for Best Picture but was snubbed in several key categories including Best Director (Martin Scorsese), Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), and Best Actress (Emma Stone). Similarly, “Poor Things” was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress for Emma Stone but missed out on Best Director for Yorgos Lanthimos while both Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo were snubbed in the Supporting Actor category.

Conversely, “The Holdovers” checked off every box it was expected to and more. Performers Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph were nominated alongside Oscar Best Supporting Actor contender Dominic Sessa while Alexander Payne followed up his DGA bid with a BAFTA nomination here for Best Director.

“All of Us Strangers” landed supporting nominations for both Claire Foy and Paul Mescal while Andrew Haigh got in for Best Director. Four out of the six Best Director nominees (Glazer, Haigh, Payne, and Triet) are first-time BAFTA nominees in this category while not one of the recognized filmmakers have ever won in this category before.

There were plenty of surprises in the acting categories, too, with “Saltburn” coming out strong with three bids — for leading man Barry Keoghan and supporting players Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike.

Elordi is also nominated for the EE Rising Star Award. Six of the acting nominees this year are previous Rising Star nominees themselves: Blunt, Mulligan, Murphy, Stone, Robbie, and Keoghan.

Here’s another tidbit: 11 of the 23 acting nominees are first-time BAFTA nominees: Hüller, Murphy, Barrino, Brooks, Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Giamatti, Randolph, Sessa, Elordi, Oparah, and Teo Yoo (“Past Lives”).

“Barbie” likely had the most disappointing outing, however, as it only secured five nominations with Greta Gerwig snubbed for Best Director, too. The bids it did manage were for Best Actress for Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Original Screenplay, Costume Design, and Production Design.

“American Fiction,” which has been growing in Oscar reputation of late, only managed one nomination — that was for Best Adapted Screenplay. Similarly “The Color Purple” only managed two bids — Best Actress for Fantasia Barrino and Best Supporting Actress for Danielle Brooks. Meanwhile, “Nyad” and “May December” were shut out completely.

British films did well, as expected, with “Rye Lane” securing two nominations including a Best Actress bid for Vivian Oparah. “How to Have Sex” also did well with three nominations. “Napoleon” did one better with four nominations while “Past Lives” had a mixed bag. It only got three bids but Teo Yoo surprised with a Best Actor nomination. Its other bids were for Original Screenplay and Film Not in the English Language.

The 2024 BAFTA ceremony will take place on February 18, hosted by David Tennant.
