The BAFTA Film Awards have unveiled this year’s longlists for 24 categories, and in the lead are Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon. Scroll down for the lists in full.
The heavyweight trio is tied with 15 longlist nods apiece. All three films pop up in best film, director, and the respective screenplay categories: Killers and Oppenheimer in adapted screenplay, while Barbie sits in original screenplay. The haul of 15 longlist mentions equals last year’s record showing from Edward Berger’s war feature All Quiet on the Western Front.
More from Deadline
Chasing the leading pack are Yorgos Lanthimos’s Golden Lion winner Poor Things with 14 and Bradley Cooper’s musical biopic Maestro with 12. Both films netted longlist mentions in best film, cinematography, director, and respective screenplay categories.
Other strong showings on the list are Emerald Fennell’s contentious high society drama Saltburn, which appears 11 times, and Andrew Haigh’s enigmatic drama All of Us Strangers, which has ten longlist mentions, including best film and two mentions in supporting actor with Paul Mescal and Jamie Bell. Jonathan Glazer’s innovative holocaust drama The Zone of Interest also has ten mentions, while Celine Song’s confident debut feature Past Lives netted 6, including best film. The strongest international showing was Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, with 7 nods, including director and original screenplay. The surprise frontrunner in the pack is Warner’s festive reboot Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, which has 8 mentions.
This year’s leading films all had strong showings in the acting categories. Leonardo DiCaprio and Cillian Murphy landed in leading actor alongside Barry Keoghan for Saltburn and George MacKay who managed to cut through the pack with the indie queer thriller Femme. German actress Sandra Hüller continued her strong year netting two acting nods, one in support actress for The Zone of Interest and leading actress for Anatomy of a Fall. How to Have Sex breakout Mia McKenna-Bruce also landed in leading actress while the film’s director, Molly Manning Walker, made the best director longlist, which includes Celine Song, Cord Jefferson, and Alexander Payne.
In notable snubs, Michael Mann’s racing biopic Ferrari is almost entirely vacant from the major categories. The film netted five longlist nods all in technical categories, including cinematography and sound. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon fared similarly with eight nods, all in technical categories, with the addition of a nod in outstanding British film. The Killer, the latest feature David Fincher made for Netflix, received one longlist nod in adapted screenplay. Elsewhere, there is no mention of Ava DuVernay’s ambitious time-hopping drama Origin, and buzzy fall features Priscilla and May December only appear twice. There was also nothing in the acting categories for Wes Anderson’s a-list ensemble comedy Asteroid City.
Similar to last year’s longlist, there is a positive presence of racial and gender diversity in all categories, with Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Teo Yoo (Past Lives), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), and Vivian Oparah (Rye Lane) all appearing in the acting categories. Keen observers will be looking to see whether this will be reflected in the final nominations pool, which will be announced on January 18.
The final round of voting to determine the winners takes place between January 19 and February 13. The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony takes place on February 18.
