Final BAFTA Predictions: Will Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Break the Record Held by ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’?
Final BAFTA Predictions: Will Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Break the Record Held by ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’?

The 77th BAFTA Awards are set to take place on Sunday, Feb. 18, at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with “Doctor Who” star David Tennant serving as the host. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” leads the pack with 13 nominations, the highest of any film this year.

More from Variety

According to Variety’s projections, “Oppenheimer” is expected to secure 10 BAFTA awards, potentially making it the most awarded film in the history of the event. George Roy Hill’s “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) previously dominated its ceremony, though Paul Newman was notably overlooked in favor of his co-lead, Robert Redford. Interestingly, “Butch Cassidy” did not clinch the best picture Oscar the year prior (it qualified in different years), losing to “Midnight Cowboy.” During its respective BAFTA run, it was chosen as the favorite in a lineup where “Patton” (1970) was not nominated.

Moreover, “Oppenheimer” has the potential to garner additional wins. Given its home-field advantage, Emily Blunt stands a strong chance against Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) due to her popularity. Furthermore, the film’s achievements suggest it could also be a contender in the costumes and makeup and hair categories.

Whether “Oppenheimer’s” BAFTA success will translate to the Oscars remains uncertain. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” with its 11 nominations, is a close competitor in several categories, including lead actress for Emma Stone, adapted screenplay, production design, costumes, makeup and hair, and outstanding British film.

Anatomy of a Fall
Anatomy of a Fall

Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” is predicted to be the evening’s second most honored film, with potential awards for Original Screenplay, Film Not in the English Language, and Leading Actress for Sandra Hüller. It could also be a contender for Editing.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) plays a pivotal role in the lead-up to the Academy Awards, thanks to the significant overlap in voting members between the two. Its influence on the Oscars is significant, often shaping the narrative for winners. Last year, the German-language film “All Quiet on the Western Front” demonstrated this by making a strong showing at the BAFTAs before securing nine Oscar nominations and four wins, despite being overlooked by major guilds.

Below are the final BAFTA predictions.
