Bad Bunny Reveals He Likes 'Speaking English in Private': 'I'm Still Learning'

The Grammy winner tells 'Vogue' that he prefers not to speak in English "on camera," because he's still learning the language

Bad Bunny prefers to speak strictly in his native language.

The rapper recently spoke with Vogue for the “73 Questions” series and shared his experience becoming bilingual.

“I’m still learning,” Bunny, 29, answered when asked what the hardest part about learning English is. Bunny, né Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, was born in Puerto Rico. He completed the interview solely in Spanish and responded only a handful of times in English.

The singer then admitted that he prefers to speak in Spanish in public settings, sharing with Vogue, "I like speaking English in private. Not on camera or somewhere else."

At first Bunny couldn’t pinpoint a specific element of learning English that is particularly difficult: "There's not a thing I can say that is the hardest thing. Nothing's made me say, 'This is hard,' specifically."

However, as the singer sat with the question, he noted that vocalizing his emotions in a foreign language sometimes causes difficulty. "I think that sometimes conveying feelings or what I’m truly thinking. Because I feel and think in Spanish, when I translate that feeling and thought into English, it’s not the same." He concluded, "That’s the hardest part."

The three-time Grammy winner also joked that the hardest English word to pronounce is "all of them," cheekily noting, "All words are hard to pronounce."

In September 2023, he shared in a Vanity Fair cover story that he only speaks in English to a select few. “With some people, I speak English — with some specific people,” said the “Tití Me Preguntó” singer. “With one of them, I couldn’t talk to her before,” he added, referencing Kendall Jenner, his girlfriend at the time. Bunny said that he's working on his fluency in English by speaking it more often.

He also shared with Vanity Fair that he plans to stay away from singing in English for the foreseeable future. “I am never going to [sing in English] just because someone says I need to do it to reach a certain audience,” he said.

“It’s not like I hate the idea …” said the rapper. “It’s just that I feel more comfortable in my own language. I think in Spanish, I feel in Spanish, I eat in Spanish, I sing in Spanish.”
