They’re back again.

Four years after “Bad Boys For Life,” Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have teamed again for “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” Sony released the first trailer for the fourth film in the “Bad Boys” franchise on Tuesday, nearly two years to the day that Smith slapped Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars before Smith later won Best Actor.

Set for release in June, “Bad Boys 4” finds its title heroes embroiled in a conspiracy that leaves them as fugitives from justice following the death of their beloved leader, Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano). The new film comes from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (credited simply as Adil & Bilall), the duo behind “Bad Boys For Life” who have also directed episodes of “Ms. Marvel” and “Snowfall.” In addition to Smith, Lawrence, and Pantoliano, the new film also stars Tiffany Haddish, Eric Dane, Ioan Guffudd, Vanessa Hudgens, and Alexander Ludwig

“Bad Boys 4” is the first major theatrical release for Smith since his outburst at the 2022 Academy Awards, an incident that resulted in Smith stepping down from the academy and being barred from academy events for 10 years. (Smith was still allowed to keep his Best Actor award for “King Richard.”) The infamy of that event is well-documented, and Smith apologized numerous times – including during press for his 2022 feature “Emancipation.” That historical drama was released by Apple TV+ and had a very limited theatrical release before it debuted on the streaming service.

“Bad Boys” first debuted in 1995, and the film was considered a breakout for Smith and original director Michael Bay. A sequel directed by Bay followed in 2003, and while it remains a favorite among fans, it did prove more divisive to general audiences despite its financial success. “Bad Boys 3” had been discussed for years after that and eventually materialized without Bay behind the camera but with Smith and Lawrence in the lead roles. “Bad Boys For Life” wound up as the highest-grossing movie of 2020 due to the fact the coronavirus pandemic shut down theaters for months. (“Bad Boys For Life” debuted in January of that year.)
