Back to the Future: Nike's self-lacing sneakers coming next spring
The days of people having to tie their own shoes like a bunch of Neanderthals may soon be relegated to the past. Just in time for Back to the Future Day — the date the present catches up to Marty McFly’s adventure in 2015 — star Michael J. Fox and honchos at Nike have confirmed that the film franchise’s coveted self-lacing sneakers are real, and they’re coming next year.
Nike PR director Heidi Burgett tantalized sneakerheads Wednesday morning with a tweet that said, “The first pair of self-lacing Nike Mag shoes is in New York City.”

A few hours later, Fox tweeted photo of a handwritten letter he received from the legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield that said, “Although the [Nike Mag] project started as science fiction, we’re now proud to turn that fiction into fact.”
The letter added that Fox would be receiving his personal pair of shoes soon, and that more kicks would be created to support the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2016. (A previous BTTF-themed Nike shoe, which didn’t self-lace, raised $9.4 million for the foundation in 2011.)

Shortly afterward, the foundation tweeted a photo of Fox sporting his very own pair of Nike Mags, complete with the telltale glowing logo. “This is real. This is today. Coming spring 2016,” the caption promised.
