'Back to Black,' the biopic that centers around Amy Winehouse's career and her album of the same name, releases in theaters May 17

Industry actress Marisa Abela steps into the late Amy Winehouse's shoes in Back to Black.

On Friday, Focus Features released a new full trailer for the biopic centered around Winehouse, the influential singer who died in 2011 at age 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning.

An official synopsis for the film describes Back to Black as the "extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame."

"Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time," the synopsis reads.

A teaser trailer released for the movie last month revealed that the film will feature sequences like Winehouse's infamous 2008 Grammy's performance. It also covers Winehouse's personal life, including her romance with Blake Fielder-Civil and her close relationship with her mother Janis Winehouse.

Filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) directed Back to Black from a screenplay written by Matt Greenhalgh, whom she previously collaborated with on Taylor-Johnson's first feature film Nowhere Boy.

Aside from Abela's starring role as Winehouse, the movie's cast also features Eddie Marsan, Bronson Webb, Ansu Kabia and Harley Bird.
