There will be no final rose for Bachelor in Paradise’s Michael Allio and Danielle Maltby.

The couple have called it quits after leaving Bachelor in Paradise season 8 last year as a couple. Allio, 39, confirmed the split on Monday's episode of Jason Tartick's Trading Secrets podcast following weeks of speculation about his relationship status.

"I guess I'll just come out with it. We're not together anymore," he said. "Yeah it's really, it's not what we planned. We both threw a lot into this relationship, and it's really awful when it doesn't work out."

Allio told Tartick — who ended his engagement to former Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe this summer — that he and Maltby, 37, realized "love is there, but you're not necessarily compatible."

"You mourn the loss, not of just that person and that friend in your life, but also the future that you had envisioned," Allio continued. "And it's to no fault of hers."

Allio said Maltby "poured everything into this" relationship, including moving to Ohio to be with him. "I just have so much admiration," he told Tartick, 34. "Yeah, and I guess that's it, you know right now. We're still you know working through some things and trying to stay close. Yeah, but, yeah, [the] last couple months have been really tough."

Allio called started over "really frightening."

"I know that time will heal because I've felt that before, but it doesn't make it any less difficult," the reality star said.

While in Paradise, Allio and Maltby bonded on the show over the tragic ends of previous relationships: Allio’s ex-wife Laura died of cancer in 2019, and Maltby’s fiancé died by suicide in 2011.

"You can make a beautiful life for yourself after tragedy and not allow it to define you," said Allio, who appeared on Katie Thurston's season of The Bachelorette.

Once their relationship was official, Allio told PEOPLE last November: "We're just excited to celebrate and experience the small things in life, the mundane stuff."

Allio said “I love you” to Maltby for the first time that month during BiP's "After the Final Rose" special.

"Even before you told me you loved me, I never doubted it," she said to Allio while speaking to PEOPLE. "I've had men tell me they love me before and none of their actions ever backed it up. I never felt completely safe and secure in the relationship."

In February, Maltby moved from Nashville to Ohio, where Allio lives with his son James, 6. “We got a great one!” Allio posted on Instagram in February about Maltby's move. “Let’s welcome this beauty to Cleveland in all the best possible ways! Here’s to new beginnings.”

Over the next few months, Allio and Maltby posted photos of them going on hikes, taking trips to Chicago and San Francisco and enjoying simple moments at home together.

“For me, the best moments of a relationship are captured in the quiet times,” Allio shared on Instagram in April. “In the early waking hours of the day or at night, when the world slows and your mind begins it’s descent back to a place more familiar, comfortable, and safe. It’s a place I love coming home to.”

Maltby commented, “My sweet and slow love.”

The nurse also shared her journey with freezing her eggs with her followers, explaining that because of her age, her new job and her recent move, she didn’t feel ready to have kids yet.

“You aren’t ready to have a child of your own yet because for you and Michael there’s other things you want to experience together first along with his son,” Maltby wrote on Instagram in April. “We both have experienced life changing loss and that can make your views and timeline shift. It's not fair that as women age, we have more pressure for the reproductive timeline- but that’s just facts. So egg freezing it is!”

When speculation about the status of Allio and Maltby’s relationship arose over the summer, he addressed it on an early August episode of the She’s All Bach podcast. The father of one said he and Maltby “love each other, like, very much,” but wanted to “keep things private.”

"Being in a public relationship, it isn’t fun,” Allio told hosts Stefanie Parker and Jackie Maroney. “Danielle and I, like, both agree that the only people that should be in our relationship are us two. So we think just the healthiest way to have a relationship is to keep it private.”
