‘Babylon Berlin’ Delivers 1.2 Million Viewers for Sky
“Babylon Berlin” has garnered 1.2 million viewers for Sky in Germany, making it the most popular launch ever on the platform aside from “Game of Thrones.”
The series, set in Berlin in the roaring 1920s, is the most expensive ever out of Germany. The launch episode hooked 577,000 linear viewers for Sky in its Friday night slot, and then a further 614,000 watched over the next six days via the pay-TV’s on-demand and streaming services.
“Babylon Berlin” follows Gereon Rath, a police officer from Cologne, who is investigating crime in Berlin. Volker Bruch (“Generation War”) and Liv Lisa Fries (“The Wave”) star in the series, which is produced by X Filme, ARD Degeto, Sky and Beta Film.
Sky is offering previews of upcoming episodes after the linear launch, which will ultimately be packaged as a 16-episode box set on Sky. The series will also air on Sky in Italy and the U.K. In Germany, pubcaster ARD will show the series in a free-to-air window next year.
Sky has set a launch date of November 5 for the U.K. and November 28 in Italy.
Beta Film distributes the series, which has been picked up by Netflix in the U.S. and Australia, HBO Europe, Telefonica in Spain, a range of pubcasters in the Nordics.
