Baby Reindeer’s Richard Gadd Responds to Viewers Looking for Real-Life Martha and Darrien

Baby Reindeer creator and star Richard Gadd — who plays Donny Dunn in the miniseries based on his horrifying real-life experience with a stalker — has encouraged viewers to halt searching for the real-life figures from Netflix’s surprise hit.

Since the series’ release on the platform, the public has been speculating on who the real-life counterparts of Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning) and Darrien O’Connor (Tom Goodman-Hill) are. However, in a recent Instagram post (courtesy of TVLine), Gadd discouraged the viewers from their search.

Gadd wrote: “People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation. Please don’t speculate on who any of the real life people could be. That’s not the point of our show. Lots of love, Richard x X.”

What is Baby Reindeer about?

Based on Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show of the same name, the seven-episode series is inspired by the creator’s real-life experience of stalking and abuse. The series follows stand-up comedian Donny, whose “one act of kindness sparks a twisted obsession.” The Baby Reindeer title reportedly came from a nickname that the stalker gave him.

Gunning stars as serial stalker with a criminal past Martha, while Goodman-Hill plays TV writer and Donny’s abuser Darrien. The rest of the cast includes Nava Mau as Teri, Amanda Root as Elle, Mark Lewis Jones as Gerry, Laura Smyth as Glenda, Hugh Coles as Francis, Nina Sosanya as Liz, Danny Kirrane as Gino, Michael Wildman as Greggsy, and Shalom Brune-Franklin as Keeley, among others. The series is co-directed by Weronika Tofilska and Josephine Bornebusch.

All seven episodes of Baby Reindeer are available to stream on Netflix.
