A new British mini-series about a barkeeper and a female stalker is rapidly becoming one of the most popular shows on Netflix.

"Baby Reindeer" is about an unsuccessful comedian called Donny who works in a bar and who is stalked by a female guest named Martha (Jessica Gunning).

"Baby Reindeer" is the nickname she gives Donny (played by Scottish comedian and author Richard Gadd) as she develops an obsession with him in a story that becomes increasingly dark.

It is reportedly based on a true story, with Gadd saying he made the miniseries to process the disturbing experiences he suffered and to explore the consequences unprocessed trauma can have.

The series has been viewed 68 million times worldwide, in the four and a half weeks since its launch, Netflix says.

The seven-part series released on April 11 reached 67.9 million views, 11.4 million of which were last week. Here, views are hours watched divided by the total running time - which in this case is just under four hours.

That brings it close to some of the streamer's ten most successful English-language series.

Comedy horror "Wednesday" is at the top of Netflix's Most Popular TV (English) category, while US-Polish series "The Witcher" from 2019 is in tenth place.
