Baby Reindeer” has quickly become a cultural juggernaut, with viewers swarming to watch this Netflix limited series written and created by Richard Gadd, who also stars. He adapted his Olivier Award-winning play about his years as a struggling comedian when he was stalked and harassed by a woman, played the fabulous Jessica Gunning. The show also depicts his abuse at the hands of an older man who first acted as a mentor. The series is a tough watch at times but always a gripping one. It’s searing television and, as a result, “Baby Reindeer” is one of the most acclaimed shows of the year.

Aramide Tinubu (Variety) declared: “Shocking, hilarious, painful, and devastating, ‘Baby Reindeer’ is a rare gem on television, reminding us of what is possible in the medium.”

David Opie (Empire) observed: “Richard Gadd confronts and processes his real-life trauma in a brave, moving, and often disturbing watch that’s rooted in comedy, yet the tears you’ll shed won’t be tears of joy or laughter.”

Judy Berman (Time) proclaimed: “That ‘Baby Reindeer’ is able to get from its familiar premiere to this place of emotional honesty and profound insight, while bringing such a large audience along for the ride, is remarkable.”

Craig Mathieson (The Age) stated: “A horror story couched in the recesses of comedy, it’s a painful, compelling viewing experience. The line between wanting to know what happens and wanting to back away is thin and dangerously sharp; Gadd never settles for anything less.”

Amelia Stout (Slant) noted: “A devastating portrayal of a man both traumatized by and dependent on his abusers’ approval and attention.”

“Baby Reindeer” has shot up in our Emmys prediction center for Best Limited Series. We are currently predicting it to earn a nomination in that category alongside “Shōgun,” “Fargo,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” and “True Detective: Night Country.” And there are plenty of reasons to think that “Baby Reindeer” could ride this hype train all the way to the Emmys. It would be a perfect fit.

Firstly, never underestimate the power of a true story. This one is a particularly grim, shocking, and personal one — but Emmy voters love true stories of any kind in this category. “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Pam & Tommy,” “Inventing Anna,” “The Dropout,” “Dopesick,” “The Underground Railroad,” “Mrs. America,” “Unbelievable,” “When They See Us,” “Chernobyl,” “Escape at Dannemora,” and “Fosse/Verdon” all earned bids in recent years.

Plus, there also a crime element to this show. Crime stories also often get nominated here, such as recent nominees “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Inventing Anna,” “Unbelievable,” and “Escape at Dannemora.”

Emmy voters also like multi-hyphenates who write, create, and star in their own shows. Other such nominees include Jason Sudeikis‘ “Ted Lasso,” Bill Hader‘s “Barry,” Quinta Brunson’s “Abbott Elementary,” Larry David‘s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Donald Glover‘s “Atlanta,” Michaela Coel‘s “I May Destroy You,” and Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s “Fleabag.”

The most apt comparison here is, obviously, “Fleabag.” Like “Fleabag,” “Baby Reindeer” started out as a one-person play that made headlines at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Both plays were then turned into TV shows that journeyed across the Atlantic. “Fleabag” bagged Waller-Bridge three Emmys for Best Comedy Writing, Best Comedy Actress, and Best Comedy Series. Of course, those victories were in the comedy section of the Emmys but “Baby Reindeer” still fits into this pattern. Coel’s “I May Destroy You,” however, was nominated for Best Limited Series, so the precedence is there.
