How 'Baby Driver' director Edgar Wright predicted film's Oscar nomination
Baby Driver was Edgar Wright’s biggest stateside hit to date by a long shot, grossing $101 million at the domestic box office (and $227 million globally). More impressive still, it earned three nominations at this year’s Oscars — and though it didn’t come away with any gold statuettes by the end of the evening, its recognition by the Academy further cemented the reputation of the film as an unmitigated triumph for the British filmmaker. And as he told us shortly before the gala show, he knew years ago that his latest was destined for inclusion on Hollywood’s biggest night.
On the Academy Awards red carpet, the 43-year-old director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz told Yahoo’s Kevin Polowy that his producer had recently reminded him that, early on in the creative process for Baby Driver, he wrote a note about how important sound was to the entire endeavor — in large part, because so much of the action is cut to the soundtrack’s bevy of songs. But his note didn’t just underline the vital role of sound in the movie — it actually said that “It would be nominated for one of the sound Oscars.”
Since he wrote the note years ago, Wright predicted that it would receive such an accolade at the 2016 Oscars. Nonetheless, aside from the fact that the movie took a bit longer to make than originally expected, Wright was right on the money — meaning that it’s probably time for him to start immediately making even grander predictions about his next project.
