Welcome back to Origins, our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Babehoven take us through “Ella’s from Somewhere Else,” the latest single from their upcoming album, Water’s Here in You.

Hudson, New York indie rockers Babehoven have dropped “Ella’s from Somewhere Else,” the latest preview of their forthcoming album, Water’s Here in You. The song is a gentle and somber (though not downtrodden) folk outing that taps into the beauty of romance, familial love, and loss.

“I want to go back to our mom’s porch and scream,” vocalist Maya Bon sings over a stunning backdrop of acoustic guitar and piano. “You’re my brother, you’re my family, you are everything to me.”

The song empowers its themes by pulling from science fiction, the intersection of love and pain, and the wondrous talents of Squirrel Flower’s Ella O’Conner Williams. “Seeing Ella live shakes something up in me that feels like a chiropractic adjustment, like she’s moving my spiritual spine back into alignment,” Bon tells Consequence. “She takes me to specific memories of my childhood. We slip together through the seams of the place we’re in, through the floorboards, down into the soil. She takes me into the pain, just enough so that I can keep my grounding.”

Squirrel Flower:

I wrote “Ella’s from Somewhere Else” after seeing Ella O’Conner Williams of Squirrel Flower perform at Tubby’s last winter. Seeing Ella live shakes something up in me that feels like a chiropractic adjustment, like she’s moving my spiritual spine back into alignment.

When I got home from the Squirrel Flower show, I found some quiet space alone in our house late at night, I lit a few candles and kept the lights off. I grabbed a piece of paper and began to write down the lyrics. The phrase “Ella’s from somewhere else” popped out. I was thinking a lot about extraterrestrial life and, in that moment, Ella seemed like she wasn’t from this world. She glows in the stage light in a particular way, she sings in an otherworldly manner. Even the way she stands feels unique.

Then, I began thinking of all the places Ella takes me in her songs. She takes me to specific memories of my childhood. We slip together through the seams of the place we’re in, through the floorboards, down into the soil. She takes me into the pain, just enough so that I can keep my grounding.

My Childhood Dog Ella:

Ella is also the name of my childhood dog who I named after Ella Fitzgerald (one of my all-time favorite singers), who is now in her older years. Ella, the dog, is my favorite being on the planet. She supported me through my teens and I think of her as one of my best friends. I began blending the two Ellas in the song and they morphed to have a double meaning together. Not only is Ella of Squirrel Flower from somewhere else, but Ella the dog is from somewhere else. They both take me to that somewhere else place together.

Love and Pain:

This song touches on both romantic and familial love, familial loss, the desire and soul-crushing inability to connect, the need to curl into myself and isolate… how I feel damaged, porous, alone. The stanza “You’re my brother, you’re my family, you are everything to me” came out and singed me as I sang it. Even through the disasters, even through the loss, I hold love.

Extraterrestrial Worlds:

3 Body Problem (Netflix)

I was thinking a lot about extraterrestrial life and sci-fi as a genre. Ryan and I had read the book series The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu while on tour with Skullcrusher in the fall of 2022. We were blown away by Liu’s depictions of alternate dimensions, universal rules, and waves of technological development. Sci-fi themes of space and connection through time and place pop up in the lyrics too.
