Ayo Edebiri is calling rumors she was beefing with Jennifer Lopez “absurd” after a clip from a 2020 podcast surfaced in which The Bear star agreed with the host, saying J.Lo’s career was a “scam.”

Edebiri’s words went viral in the lead-up to her guest hosting Saturday Night Live, where Lopez was booked as the musical guest of the week.

“That would be like Mr. Bean and Mick Jagger beefing — and I’m obviously Mr. Bean. She’s J.Lo!” Edebiri told Vanity Fair.

Edebiri addressed the controversy on SNL, saying in a game show sketch, “OK, OK, we get it. It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid.”

After their appearance on SNL, Lopez was asked about the rumored beef and said Edebiri had apologized to her, something Edebiri confirmed to Vanity Fair, saying, “She was very chill and nice about it.”

Although controversy surrounded Edebiri’s appearance on SNL, in the end, hosting the sketch show was a dream come true.

SNL is something that in my bones, I dreamed of as a comedian, as a young kid,” she said. “That to me is a pinnacle of success.”

Edebiri appeared on the Scam Goddess podcast, where, in a 2020 episode, host Laci Mosley claimed Lopez’s career had been “one long scam.”

“Well, that’s the thing — she thinks she’s on multiple tracks, but it’s not her,” Edebiri said at the time. “I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs.”

She continued, “A lot of the write-ups of the songs will be like, ‘J.Lo didn’t have time to make it to the studio.’ Like, ‘J.Lo was busy.’ Doing what? Not singing, obviously.”
