Awkward moment on 'The Voice' as Camila Cabello thinks ex Shawn Mendes is auditioning

There was a slightly awkward moment during Tuesday night's blind auditions on The Voice, when 29-year-old contestant Tanner Howe decided to sing a rendition of "Mercy" by Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello's ex-boyfriend.

Camila and Shawn broke up in November 2021 after almost two and a half years of dating. However, even though all of the coaches except Camila turned around for Tanner, the first-time Voice coach claimed it wasn't because of his song choice.

"I was like, is Shawn on stage right now? I know him better than everybody in this room. But the reason I didn't turn around was I felt like you sounded a little bit too much like him. Obviously he has an amazing voice, I love this song, but I would be curious, when you pick your coach, for you to just kind of distinguish yourself," Camila told Tanner.

Tanner responded, sharing, "I really respect Shawn as an artist and I see myself in that lane, but I totally love what you're saying. Thank you so much. I'll try and be more unique," to which Camila hilariously replied, "I was in his lane deeply."

While Camila wanted Tanner to sound less like Shawn, Gwen Stefani thought he was just fine. So, in the end, Tanner joined Team Gwen.
