SOUTH BEND — Chicago-based jazz vocalist and composer Alyssa Allgood performs at 7:30 p.m. May 15 at Merrimans’ Playhouse, 401 E. Colfax Ave., Suite 135.

Downbeat Magazine has described her as “assured and daring,” and the Chicago Tribune has called her “a model ofsophisticated song interpretation.”

An award-winning jazz vocalist, composer, arranger and educator, Allgood released her fourth album, “From Here,” on April 19.

It’s her first album to feature her original music, with 10 of the 12 tracks written by the singer. She recorded it with musicians John Patitucci, Kendrick Scott, Geoffrey Keezer and Greg Ward.

Her concert at Merrimans’ includes her Chicago quartet of Julius Tucker, Ethan Philion and Jon Deitemyer.

Allgood’s three previous albums are 2021’s “What Tomorrow Brings,” 2018’s “Exactly Like You” and 2016’s “Out of the Blue.”

She won the inaugural Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Voice Competition in 2017 and the David Baker Memorial Scholarship offered through the Jazz Education Network in 2022.

She also teaches in the jazz department at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
