Avengers: Infinity War, Into the Spider-Verse storm Visual Effects Society Awards

2019 VES Award winners: Avengers Infinity War leads

After Black Panther‘s historic Best Picture Oscar nomination last month, fans of the superhero genre have another awards season highlight to celebrate as Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dominated Tuesday night’s Visual Effects Society Awards.

Hosted by comedian Patton Oswalt, the 17th VES Awards ceremony awarded winners in 24 categories, with Infinity War and Spider-Verse leading the pack with four victories each.

Though Spider-Verse won top animated feature along with accolades for its characters, environments, and effects simulations, Infinity War won best overall feature in addition to bagging trophies for Thanos’ character animation, effects simulation, and compositing.

Steven Spielberg’s VFX-driven feature Ready Player One grabbed two VES honors — particularly for its computer-generated environmental recreation of the Overlook Hotel from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining — while Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic First Man scored one win for its supporting visual effects.

Across the last 10 VES Awards ceremonies, six top-film winners have gone on to win the Academy’s corresponding visual effects award, while Martin Scorsese’s Hugo remains the only VES winner for supporting visual effects to have gone on to win the Oscar over the same period.

On the television side, Netflix’s Lost in Space led the charge with four overall wins on top of Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan receiving the VES’ Visionary Award, Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss accepting a distinctive honor for creative excellence, and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri earning the group’s lifetime achievement award.
