Avengers: Endgame's writers have revealed why they decided not to address Hulk and Black Widow's romance.

The fan-favourite characters have shared brief romance in the past, but their love affair was interrupted following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Infinity War, the pair had an awkward moment after reuniting to fight against the invasion of Thanos.

And apart from this, we haven't seen any other signs of their relationship moving forward.

Speaking on The Empire Film Podcast, McFeely revealed that they "thought it would be more elegant not to address that".

"We certainly tried to," he said. "In Infinity War we have scenes... wrote 'em, shot 'em... of them sort of hashing that out. 'You've been gone, I've moved on' – that kind of stuff.

"It became very clear that if a scene was not on the 'A plot', it could not survive Infinity War.

"That thing has to be on rails just to get to the finish line. You couldn't wrap up loose threads just because you wanted to."

As for Endgame, Markus added that it would have been "odd" to further develop a relationship while the Avengers were all busy with the task of bringing back the remaining MCU superheroes.

"It [would] seem a little odd, in the midst of everyone's mourning and [Hulk's] change to a 2,000-pound genius, to go, 'And they're dating!'"

Avengers: Endgame is out now.
