‘Avengers: Endgame’ Hopes to Top ‘Avatar’ in Return to Theaters With New Footage

Though it feels like “Avengers: Endgame” shattered every box office record there is, the one it still has to beat is the all-time global box office record set by James Cameron’s “Avatar.” But the Marvel epic may hit that mark yet, as “Avengers: Endgame” is set to return to theaters along with new footage.

In an interview with Comicbook.com as part of a junket event for “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Kevin Feige said that the studio plans to re-release the film in theaters with extra scenes not included in the original release.

“We are doing that,” Feige told Comicbook.com. “I don’t know if it’s been announced. And I don’t know how much … Yeah, we’re doing it next weekend.”

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While it’s unclear what sort of footage to expect (no spoilers!) or just how will be added to the film’s already three-plus hours runtime.

“Avengers: Endgame,” the epic conclusion in Marvel’s Phase Three of their Cinematic Universe, has so far grossed $2.743 billion at the global box office since opening on April 26. “Avatar,” which released in 2009, managed $2.788 billion.
