Is 'Avengers 4' the end of the line for Chris Evans as Captain America? His latest tweet provides a clue
Chris Evans has long discussed his desire to hang up his red, white, and blue Captain America uniform and shield. Last year, he said it was up to Marvel and got philosophical about the possible end of his superhero run, and then earlier this year, he implied that Avengers: Infinity War would be his final go-round as the character. As the millions who saw that film found out, Steve Rogers escaped death when Thanos (Josh Brolin) snapped his fingers and, in an instant, wiped out half of all of life in the universe (including many of his Avengers mates), thus briefly putting to rest the rumors that Cap was destined to die. But a new tweet from Evans suggests that the time for mourning Rogers may soon be upon us.
Earlier today, Evans tweeted out the below farewell upon completing his work on the still-untitled sequel to Infinity War (currently referred to as Avengers 4):
Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.

There’s no intimation in the above post that Captain America will actually perish in the upcoming sequel, set to hit theaters next year. But it does reconfirm what Evans made clear to the New York Times earlier this year — that Avengers 4 would be the end of his Marvel Cinematic Universe tenure, at least for the foreseeable future. His original contract — which was for six films — was extended so that he could make the upcoming blockbuster (technically, his seventh feature). And now, the above missive leaves little doubt that he’s done saving the world alongside Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, and the rest of his MCU co-stars.
Whether this means the series will move on without a Cap, or someone else (say, Bucky?) will take up his mantle, remains a guessing game for now. But fans, predictably, are taking Evans’s latest social media post as news that Cap’s days are numbered:
