Avatar: The Way of Water will be available to stream on two streaming platforms very soon.

Making its way from the big screen to the online stream, the Avatar sequel is about to hit two streamers this summer: Disney+ and Max. News of its streaming release was announced on May 15, five months after the film hit theaters in December.

Avatar: The Way of Water — starring Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña — marks the long-awaited sequel to Avatar, which made its theatrical debut in December 2009. The film has been in the works for quite some time following the success of its predecessor, though production delays kept pushing back the actual release.

Fast forward nearly 13 years, fans can now return to the planet Pandora to follow Jake and Neytiri's family and "the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure," per an official logline for the movie.

Early box office numbers pulled a global total of $435 million over the opening weekend, making it the fourth-biggest opening weekend of 2022. But James Cameron's 3-D CGI sequel doesn't stop with Avatar 2 as more films are already in the works! In fact, Avatar 3 was shot back-to-back with the second film and is expected to debut on Dec. 20, 2024.

Following multiple delays with the release, Avatar: The Way of Water officially hit theaters on Dec. 16, 2022.

What is Avatar: The Way of Water's exclusive theatrical release window?

Currently, Avatar: The Way of Water is only viewable in theaters, but it's headed to streamer this summer!

Prior to a release date being announced, predictions of its drop were made based on Disney's exclusive theatrical window policy. However, the company hadn't shared updates within the period between its theater debut and its streamer announcement, leaving fans in the dark.

While assumptions were made from statements put out by Disney in previous years — like its minimum 45-day exclusive theatrical release policy in September 2021 — viewers had to wait way longer than that time frame for Avatar: The Way of Water.

If that policy was in effect, Avatar fans would've been able to stream the sequel film in January 2023. Regardless of the uncertainty and anticipation, the wait is finally over! Disney announced in May when and where Avatar: The Way of Water will be available to stream this summer.

When will Avatar: The Way of Water be available to stream?

An official streaming release date was confirmed for Avatar: The Way of Water on May 15. Disney announced that it will be available to stream on June 7 on both Disney+ and Max, the enhanced streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery that launches on May 23 in the U.S.

When was Avatar: The Way of Water released on digital?

After its 100-plus day theatrical window, Avatar: The Way of Water was released on digital on March 28. With each purchase, Disney and 20th Century are giving viewers an inside look at the making of the film compiled into three hours of bonus materials.

Performance capture is among the topics included, showcasing how the undersea world of Pandora was created, in addition to the casting process. Postproduction and the stunts enacted in the film are also explored.

When will Avatar: The Way of Water be released on Blu-Ray?

Avatar: The Way of Water will become available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD on June 20. The same day, the 2009 original Avatar will also be offered in 4K UHD for the first time.

Director Cameron said in a statement, "I am grateful that audiences all over the globe went to the theaters to see Avatar: The Way of Water. Now my hope is you will bring the film home and experience the adventure with your family in the best at-home viewing quality possible on 4K Ultra HD."
