“Avatar: The Last Airbender” reveals live-action June, Jet, Suki's mom, and more

Netflix shares first looks at 4 more characters making the jump to live-action, plus the reveal of Suki's mom.

A familiar bounty hunter (with a unique steed), a freedom fighter, an Earth Kingdom inventor, and everyone's favorite Gran Gran are making their way into the live-action space.

Netflix shared first looks at four more Avatar: The Last Airbender characters making the jump from animation to the upcoming fantasy series coming next year. Those include Arden Cho as June, Sebastian Amoruso as Jet, Community and Mythic Quest star Danny Pudi as the Mechanist, and Casey Camp-Horinket as Gran Gran.

Additional images reveal Tamlyn Tomita (Cobra Kai, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) as Yukari, Suki's mother, whom Avatar fans never met as a character on the original Nickelodeon series; and a blurry background image of what appears to be a familiar-looking bear spirit. (Is that you, Hei Bai?!)

The series will begin to adapt the first season of the original show, set in a world of the four elemental nations of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. At a time when the Fire Nation is deep into its war for world domination, the young airbender Aang (Gordon Cormier) awakens to claim his place as the new Avatar, a reincarnated being who's meant to harness the power of all four elements to maintain balance in the world.

June is described as "a tough and persistent bounty hunter known for her ruthless efficiency." In the original cartoon, she was hired by the Fire Nation's Prince Zuko to help track down Aang. The image also gives hints at what her steed looks like in live-action: the shirshu, a creature of the Earth Kingdom that can't see but uses its highly enhanced sense of smell to track prey.

Albert Kim, the showrunner of the live-action series, recently told EW that some characters and events will be reworked in new ways. So don't immediately expect June to pop up in the live-action Avatar in the same way she did on the animated show. "We had to sometimes unravel storylines and remix them in a new way to make sense for a serialized drama," he said. "So I'm very curious to see what'll happen in terms of reaction to that."

Jet is another familiar character from the original as a rebel fighting against the Fire Nation in whatever ways he can. The Mechanist is described as "an eccentric inventor and engineer who’s doing his best to raise his son in a war-torn world" — that son being Lucian-River Chauhan's "idealistic and high-flying" Teo.

Then there's Gran Gran, who's the grandmother of waterbender Katara (Kiawentiio) and her brother Sokka (Ian Ousley), as well as the matriarch of the Southern Water Tribe. The presence of Yukari, however, points to one small way the live-action series is going to be expanding upon the world of the animated original.

Viewers didn't get to experience much backstory for the character of Suki, the fan-wielding Kyoshi warrior, on Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. Here, fans finally get to meet Yukari, "the fiercely protective mayor of her small village on Kyoshi Island," as she's described. Yukari is pictured next to Maria Zhang as Suki.

Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere its first season of eight hourlong episodes on Netflix this Feb. 22. Here more from Kim's interview with EW about adapting the series.
