Studio tour showcases art to community

The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition invites the community to meet local artists during the annual Tulsa Art Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 8. Art studios, collectives and individual artists will open their doors and welcome visitors for an exclusive look at their creative spaces.

The self-guided neighborhood tour showcases artists’ studios and highlights a variety of artistic mediums. Visitors can meet the artists and buy their artwork. Featured artists work in paint, installation, jewelry, multimedia, collage and more.

Artist shares Chickasaw art at New York event

Courtney Parchcorn-John is among an elite group of First American artists selected to share the art and culture of beadwork during the National Museum of the American Indian's Women’s History Month “Beauty of Beadwork” exhibition March 16-17.

Parchcorn-John (Chickasaw), along with Tessa Robledo (Comanche/Kiowa), Katrina Mitten (Miami Tribe of Oklahoma) and Julie Ayers (Tlingit and Nisga’a) were invited by the Smithsonian to share their techniques and explain the beads and materials used to create beautiful accessories and decor.

The event was conducted in conjunction with Women’s History Month.

'Avatar' concert coming to Civic Center

"Avatar: The Last Airbender in Concert" is bringing the show’s iconic musical score to life, in harmony with highlights and favorite moments from the series, all with a live orchestra, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Civic Center Music Hall.

Local poet wins annual Robert Frost Farm prize

The Trustees of the Robert Frost Farm in Derry, New Hampshire, and the Hyla Brook Poets recently announced Sarah Spivey of Oklahoma City the winner of the 14th annual Frost Farm Prize for metrical poetry for her poem, “The Dispossession.”

The 2024 Frost Farm Prize judge, A.M. Juster, selected the winning poem after reading more than 876 anonymous entries. Spivey's poem stood out for its ambitious subject matter, music and use of form.

Spivey will receive $1,000 and be a featured reader at the Hyla Brook Reading Series at the Robert Frost Farm on Aug. 16. The reading kicks off the ninth annual Frost Farm Poetry Conference.

Mural festival celebrates women in the arts

The fourth annual Sunny Dayz Mural Festival is from noon to 8 p.m. June 1 at 113 N 4th St. It will celebrate women and gender minority artists through the creation and advocacy of public art.

Sunny Dayz Mural Festival has chosen 52 artists to create 30 murals and will have more than 50 vendors, including food and drinks and a diverse lineup of live music. This family-friendly event has something for everyone. The artists will begin their work on May 25 and the community is invited to watch.

McKnight Center announces season lineup

The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts announces its 2024-2025 season, which includes an impressive lineup of performances by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, touring Broadway musical "Chicago," country legend Lyle Lovett and more.

The performing arts center’s sixth season kicks off with a celebratory weekend in September with a rare solo concert by Oklahoma native Vince Gill and a gala concert headlined by Broadway and film star Idina Menzel. The season concludes in April with the popular touring Broadway musical "Mean Girls," written by Tina Fey.

Returning for two performances is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Maestro Riccardo Muti. Also returning is the annual Chamber Music residency, which will feature two public concerts, a private concert for donors followed by an onstage soiree dinner with the artists, a youth concert for children and masterclasses for Oklahoma State University students.

New this season, The McKnight Center presents its Recital Hall Roundup concert series on Tuesday evenings.
